Brian Kersten's story begins on the idyllic landscapes of a farm in Appleton, Wisconsin, where his early experiences with animals shaped his destiny. This connection, nurtured from a young age, propelled him toward a future in animal care. Determined to pursue his passion professionally, he excelled academically, earning a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from the University of Minnesota in 1977 with high distinction. He furthered his commitment by achieving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1983, laying the foundation for a distinguished career in veterinary medicine.
His early professional years were spent in Burlington, Wisconsin, where he worked in a mixed animal practice. His expertise grew as he treated various animal ailments, preparing him for greater challenges. In 1985, driven to serve broader communities, he ventured to Haiti. He dedicated 2.5 years to development and humanitarian projects there, focusing on animal health and community welfare. This pivotal experience broadened his worldview and deepened his resolve to use his skills where they were most needed.
Returning invigorated from his international service, he purchased and managed a veterinary practice in Baldwin, Wisconsin, in 1987. Under his stewardship, the practice became a cornerstone of the community, known for its exceptional care and client service. He led the Pierce St. Croix Humane Society as president from 2001 to 2003, advocating for animal welfare and spearheading community initiatives that enhanced the human-animal bond.
